Proverbs 21:9 It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a contentious woman in a wide house
Proverbs 21:19 It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman.
Proverbs 27:15 A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.
Those verses just say that it is hard. They do not say that he should live on the corner of the roof, just that he feels like it.
Did you know that the name “Sarai” means “contentious”?
from Net Bible Dictionary
SARAH; SARAI – sa’-ra, sa’-ri: (1) In Gen 17:15 the woman who up to that time has been known as Sarai (Saray; Sara) receives by divine command the name Sarah (Sarah; Sarra). (This last form in Greek preserves the ancient doubling of the r, lost in the Hebrew and the English forms.)
The former name appears to be derived from the same root as Israel, if, indeed, Gen 32:28 is intended as an etymology of Israel. “She that strives,” a contentious person,
Sarai ENABLED her husband to take the wrong path toward fulfillment. She invited Hagar into their marriage (Gen 16:2ff). Then, for 13 years there was contention in their home. GOD worked a transformation and Sarai became Sarah which means princess/ruler (someone who has authority BESIDE her husband not beneath him!) . Sarah put her foot down firmly about Hagar and Abraham was very displeased with what Sarah wanted for the marriage and family. But he checked with GOD, and GOD told him to “do as she tells you“
Gen 21:10-12 So she said to Abraham, “Cast out this slave woman with her son; … And the thing was very displeasing to Abraham… But God said to Abraham, “Be not displeased… whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you,
IF a husband finds himself chastising and judging the wife of his youth for being “a contentious wife”!… he would do well to ask himself:
WHY is she contentious?
WHAT “provokes” contention
and perhaps he should even THANK GOD for making a woman who can genuinely HELP him to die to his flesh and become Christlike. She cares enough about his spiritual welfare and their marriage to risk his displeasure and point these things out to him. GOD BLESS HER!
The following verse sure seems to be saying that a proud heart of an individual will stir up strife/contention in those around him.
Pr 28:25 ¶ He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife : but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made fat.
So, husband, if you think she is a “contentious wife” be sure to check your heart! (and vice versa to wives )
